The Alliance Public Library will host Humanities Nebraska’s “All Original, All Nebraska” live music program by Dan Holtz and Gary Zalud on Thursday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alliance Public Library Rose Garden.
In “All Original, All Nebraska,” the duo brings Nebraska history to life through their acoustic-electric interpretations of Holtz’s story songs. This presentation is made possible by Humanities Nebraska, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and the Alliance Public Library Foundation as part of the HN Speakers Bureau.
Holtz and Zalud, whose musical collaboration dates back to their childhood in Ord, NE, now perform as the Flatwater Reunion after recently reuniting. They played together in a musical group called Calico nearly 50 years ago.
Dr. Holtz is Professor Emeritus of English at Peru State; Dr. Zalud is Professor Emeritus of Literacy Education and was a long-time Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. In 2000, Holtz received the Nebraska State College System’s Teaching Excellence Award and, with support from Humanities Nebraska, has conducted over 500 programs statewide using music, historical stories, and narratives. Zalud received the 2015-16 USD School of Education Excellence in Service Award for his impactful work with school districts in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Iowa.
Speakers are available to any nonprofit organization in Nebraska. Each program lasts 30 minutes to an hour, plus a question-and-answer session. The most common users of the HN Speakers Bureau are elementary and high schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums and historical societies, agencies serving the elderly, rural organizations, churches, arts organizations, and ethnic organizations. Humanities Nebraska sponsors the largest Speakers Bureau program in the United States, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities.
