History of Montgomery Township: The opening of the Montgomery Mall on February 26, 1977

One of our readers recently asked if there was a list of all the stores at the Montgomery Mall in Montgomery Township on its opening day. We were able to search the digitized editions of the Reporter on newspapers.com and found an article with a list of the stores.

What an incredible variety! The mall was truly the ideal place for a one-stop shopping trip. We had forgotten a few stores, such as Woolworth’s, CVS, Roy Rogers and two major book retailers, Walden and B. Dalton.

Saturday, February 26, 1977, was the date of the mall’s grand opening. Local celebrities Captain Noah and Al Alberts were in attendance at the 10 a.m. grand opening. The mall opened with two major department stores, Wanamaker’s and JC Penney. Bamberger’s and Sears were added later.

Enjoy these photos from a time when shopping was a social event.
