Historic fire: 66-year-old arrested for arson at Jewish Museum of Maryland

According to Baltimore police, a 66-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting a fire outside the Jewish Museum of Maryland.

Assadollah Hashemi, who has a history of arson, was arrested without issue by SWAT officers at a residence on Druid Park Lake Drive on Saturday, according to police. Arrest records state Hashemi is charged with attempted first-degree arson and attempted second-degree arson.

According to investigators, a fire was set outside the museum’s secure entrance gates on Lloyd Street in Baltimore on August 4.

Baltimore Jewish Council Executive Director Howard Libit told WJZ that the incident was captured by a surveillance camera system.

“If you look at the video again, it looks like someone arrived at the museum around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, placed an object in front of the locked entrance gate, lit it and disappeared,” Libit explained.

According to Libit, the remains of the fire were discovered Monday at the foot of the museum entrance by a construction crew conducting repairs at the facility.

The construction team subsequently reported the material damage because the building was wedged between two old synagogues.

Local and federal investigators have arrived at the scene to work on the case, Libit said Wednesday.

“It is difficult to believe that someone without anti-Semitic or anti-Israel intentions would arbitrarily light a small fire in front of a facility between two historic synagogues that is clearly marked as Jewish,” Libit said.

Last year the museum was closed to the public for repairs.
