Four teams hope to make it 2-0 after overcoming the nerves of the first week.

As Wisconsin high school football approaches its final non-league game for most leagues, there are several key matchups looming that could determine playoff placement.

Here are three games involving Wisconsin State Journal-area teams. Readers can vote on which game we’ll cover in Game of the Week.

Madison Memorial and Waunakee are both in top form heading into this week’s clash of the undefeated.

The Spartans scored 37 points in the first quarter and beat Milwaukee Riverside 61-6. Owen Fiedler completed all four of his passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Seven different Spartans scored points: AJ Danso ran six times for 91 yards and a touchdown, Kam Parker ran three times for 74 yards and a touchdown, and Ty Aparicio caught two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.

Waunakee, meanwhile, won 38-0 thanks to quarterback Vance Johnson, who passed for 202 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 24 yards on the ground. The Chris Graverson era got off to a strong start, thanks in part to Sullivan Scadden, who rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Here are the results of Madison area high school football games from Week 1 and the schedule for Week 2.

Lodi (1-0) at McFarland (0-1), Friday, 7:00 p.m.

The Lodi football team looks a lot different than it did when it played in the state championship last season, but as the Blue Devils ushered in a new era under new coach Kyle Mack, they were able to pull out a narrow 7-6 victory over Monroe.

Quarterback Kale Schneider threw a game-winning 32-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Kurt in the first quarter. Brody Ripp rushed for 100 yards as the Blue Devils caught up. The defense gave up 309 yards but had an interception by Karrell Branch and was led in tackles by Grayson Koeppen with 14 total tackles.

They must find a way to stop McFarland’s passing attack. Quarterback Garrett Crull completed 11 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown in a 38-10 loss to Madison Edgewood. Blake Bernhardt caught two of those passes for 104 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Cornish also caught five passes.

Kenosha Indian Trail (1-0) in Verona (1-0), Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Three Poteats

Verona’s Tre Poteat celebrates with teammates after scoring a touchdown during the second round of the 2023 WIAA Division 1 playoffs in Verona.

SAMANTHA MADAR, STATE JOURNAL

Several seasons removed from the state championship and a city split into two high schools, Sun Prairie East is still a force to be reckoned with. Nevertheless, Verona opened the season with a 27-7 victory over the Cardinals.

Quarterback Caleb Hallmark threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Tennessee recruit Tre Poteat ran for 179 yards and scored a touchdown on 12 carries.

Poteat is a four-star recruit who is being heralded for his play at cornerback, where he totaled five tackles and one interception. He will help a defense that had three sacks against the Cardinals stop a Kenosha Indian Trail team that beat Madison La Follette 20-0.
