To kick off the season, both the Florida State Seminoles and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are hitting the road…or more accurately, heading across the sea to play in Ireland.
In week 0 of the 2024 season, the conference opponents will face each other in Dublin, the capital of the European country.
So what brings the two neighboring opponents all the way across the pond?
Of course, the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
The Yellow Jackets already know the Emerald Isle from personal experience. In 2016, they traveled to Dublin to defeat Boston College at Aviva Stadium. Florida State, on the other hand, is traveling to Ireland for the first time.
Almost 40 years ago, in 1988, the NCAA hosted its first sanctioned American college football game anywhere in Europe, let alone Ireland.
It took place on Lansdowne Road in Dublin and was originally called the Emerald Isle Classic.
In the very first playing of this game, Boston College defeated the Army Black Knights 38-24.
Since then, Ireland has hosted an NCAA football game seven more times (1989, 1996, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2023).
The game between Florida State and Georgia Tech will be the tenth college football classic in Ireland, with two more scheduled for 2025 (Iowa State vs. Kansas State) and 2027 (Pitt vs. Wisconsin).
