Grambling State University opens the door to a new age and era with the grand opening of the institution’s Digital Library and Learning Commons on Thursday, August 22.
This is a historic moment for GSU, where the old AC Lewis Memorial Library was opened in 1962 and an extension was built in 1986.
The new library is a central academic information hub designed to facilitate access to resources and connect users with community information.
The building also honors GSU’s history and heritage through custom wall coverings that highlight graduates who have achieved notable achievements.
What makes the new Digital Library and Learning Commons so important, however, is that it was created specifically for the new information age that exists today and will continue to grow and evolve.
GSU’s new Digital Library and Learning Commons are designed for exactly this purpose.
The old AC Lewis Archives had 198,193 volumes of reading and research materials. The new Digital Library and Learning Commons provide access to over 1,613,929 items, including books, periodicals, research journals, films, filmstrips, microform resources, electronic resources, and media materials and devices.
The state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot facility is designed to support all aspects of learning. With over 500 computer stations, 15,000 square feet of learning space, and multipurpose rooms for events, meetings, and seminars, the Digital Library and Learning Commons is the ultimate intersection of scholarship, curiosity, and community.
It is designed to provide equitable and comprehensive bibliographic access to resources in all formats and to expand access to library resources and services beyond the physical library building through the library’s digital/online collection system and access to all academic library resources statewide through membership in LOUIS, a consortium of 47 college and university libraries in the state of Louisiana.
