Groundbreaking for new recreation center on Zierdt Road – The Madison Record

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the future recreation center in western Huntsville took place, marking the start of a one-year construction project to build a new playground in the city’s fifth district.

The single-story, 25,000-square-foot facility is located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road. The design of the facility is similar to the Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road, which is typically one of Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s busiest centers.

“This is an exciting step forward in our efforts to provide a better quality of life for all parts of the city. Although this area has experienced tremendous residential growth, it has lacked recreational amenities. That will now change,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle.

The new facility will include a gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts and three indoor pickleball courts. Work will also include three outdoor pickleball courts and landscaping.

Construction work is expected to take one year.

“This center will meet the growing demand for recreational opportunities and promote a vibrant and active community,” said 5th District Councilman John Meredith. “I want to express my sincerest thanks to the City Council and my fellow Council members for their commitment and support in making this project a reality.”

The new facility brings the number of recreation and community centers citywide to 15, complementing more than 65 public parks. Parks and Recreation Director James Gossett said the project is a great addition to the city’s recreation offerings.

“More importantly, it is a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality facilities to all of our residents,” he said. “This center will serve as a vibrant hub for sports, fitness and community events, fostering a stronger, more connected community.”
