Grieving Montgomery County family expresses frustration over frequency of traffic light changes at intersection where loved one died (2022)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the intersection of FM 149 and Spur 149 in Montgomery County has had traffic lights for a year.

This should be good news for a family, but Zachary Cook told ABC13 that the devices are not effective because they only flash.

“It’s just crazy that no action is being taken on this,” he said.

Zachary Cook lost his grandmother Beverly Cook in July 2022 after she was involved in a car accident at this location. She succumbed to her injuries a few days after the accident, prompting her son to intervene immediately.

“I realized we needed a light here,” Marcus Cook told ABC13 in August 2022.

He fought to make this happen, but the family says they were promised that everything would be finished by the end of the year.

Why do the lights just flash?

TxDOT sent ABC13 a statement saying they were waiting for BNSF Railway to synchronize their railroad signals with the lights.

There are railway tracks near the intersection.

BNSF also announced in a statement that it had reached an agreement with TxDOT in July that would enable this synchronization.

Both parties said everything should be fully operational by mid-October.

Zachary Cook said he is optimistic but is taking a wait-and-see approach until everything is finalized.

“This is the intersection that prevented my grandmother from seeing my wedding,” he said. “We just want to speed this up so families don’t have to deal with it anymore.”

BNSF said this is all part of the process and everything is “on schedule.”

They also said they “understand the frustration” given the time it takes to complete the entire project.
