Georgia’s defensive players face groundbreaking performances in Week 1

Georgia defensive players ready for outstanding performances in Week 1

The disadvantage of such an elite unit is that it must be constantly replenished due to fluctuation. Georgia still has more than enough work to do on defense to field another top player in the country this season.

DawgsHQs Jake Rowe spoke with Kaiden Smith on the On3 Roundtable this week about potential breakout players for the Bulldogs defense this season, but he didn’t have any concrete answers because he didn’t know how many names he could pick from each spot.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s a lot of guys. That’s it,” Rowe said. “I mean, Georgia has kind of a changing of the guard in some areas of the defense. I mean, you can go to the first, second and third levels of defense.”

The only player Rowe selected was Christen Miller, a redshirt sophomore on the defensive line, after he recorded 14 tackles and a sack last year.

Despite considering a transfer, Miller has now returned and Rowe is expected to have a successful season.

“I mean, look at the defensive line? Christen Miller had a great offseason. I would say he was a factor last year, but not one of their top players and actually slipped into the transfer portal,” Rowe said. “I really hope he has a great season, and Georgia needs that from him.”

As for the linebackers and edges, as well as the secondary, Rowe had all sorts of names to offer. He sees several names at both levels that could become important names in the ‘Dawgs’ defense.

“You know, you look at the outside linebackers and the pass rush? Damon Wilson is one guy, CJ Allen, Raylen Wilson, Jalon Walker. They’re all there in that kind of front seven guys at linebacker,” Rowe said.

“They are still in the process of securing their positions in the secondary with former four- and five-star players who are impressive and competing hard for the spots,” Rowe added.

Georgia is by no means lacking talent on defense, even after losing many players from four teams that were among the top five in the country over the past five years. Rowe said it’s not a question of if anyone will be next in that group, just who will be in it.

“I think Georgia is going to have a lot of outstanding players on defense this year,” Rowe said.
