After a perfect regular season, the Bulldogs were beaten by rival Alabama in the SEC Championship game, so the committee chose the one-loss Crimson Tide over the two-time defending champions. Georgia had won 29 consecutive games prior to this matchup.
The Bulldogs were the first team to miss the playoffs despite being ranked number one entering conference championship weekend.
Georgia had to play in the Orange Bowl against Florida State, which also was eliminated from the playoffs despite a perfect record. They were passed over due to a leg injury to their star quarterback Jordan Travis.
The Bulldogs crushed the Seminoles with a historic 63-3 victory. Georgia set a new record for the largest margin of victory of any bowl game with a 60-point margin.
