Georgia Brown scores a brace, South Florida beats Jacksonville 5-1 and Chris Brown’s first win
TAMPA, Fla. (August 18, 2024) – The University of South Florida returned to Corbett Stadium on Sunday for an intrastate game against Jacksonville. Georgina Brown scored her second career brace as the Bulls defeated the Dolphins 5-1.
Chris Brown won his first victory as head coach.
Georgina Brown scored the first goal of the season for the Bulls. Sadie Sider-Echenberg brought a beautiful ball into the penalty area after a free kick. Anna Sutter redirected the ball with a header and the ball fell at the feet of Georgina Brown.

Georgina Brown scored a second goal in the 34th minute. Brooke Fabry fired a powerful shot at the goal, but the JU goalkeeper parried with a diving save. Georgina Brown was there to catch the rebound and hit the net.

Michael Hill gave the Bulls a 3-0 lead when she fired a shot at the goalie with great speed that rolled through the keeper and into the net. USF went into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Sider-Echenberg found a cutting Sarah Brunner just outside the box early in the second half. Brunner placed a shot at the bottom near post to give USF a 4-0 lead in the 46th minute.

The Dolphins took the lead in the 47th minute with a goal from Logan Gonzales.
The Bulls did not let this bother them and extended their lead to 5:1. Serita Thurton sent a beautiful cross from the baseline into the penalty area onto the foot of Anna Sutter. Sutter directed the shot with his left foot into a wide open net.

The Bulls had 21 shots on goal, including nine on goal. Sider-Echenberg picked up the first two assists of her career. Sutter and Thurton both recorded their ninth career assists. Fabri earned her first career points with her assist.
Leire Herraez Gallach was in goal from the start and was not allowed to shoot. Logan McGruder played the second half as goalkeeper for the Bulls. She made one save and conceded one goal.
South Florida’s defense was strong, allowing Jacksonville only two shots on goal the entire game. USF allowed JU just one corner kick.

“Our counter pressure and reaction to take the game back and not give Jacksonville any room is as good as it’s ever been here at USF. This is a big step in the right direction. It keeps us closer to their goal and allows us to get more shots on goal and hopefully score more goals.

The 2024 season will be the first with Chris Brown at the helm. He has served as associate head coach for the past 17 seasons. Brown helped the Bulls to three AAC regular season titles, three AAC Tournament titles and eight NCAA Tournament appearances – winning a conference title each year from 2017-2021 and making five straight NCAA appearances during that span. Brown helped the Bulls to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010, a program-record 16 wins and best third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019, both the conference regular season and tournament title in 2020 and a streak of 10 consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins (2012-2021). Brown has led the Bulls to every NCAA appearance in program history, including two second-round appearances and three AAC Championship Game appearances.
As associate head coach, he mentored the program’s first All-American and recent USF Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Evelyne Viens, who earned three All-America honors and an Olympic gold medal with the Canadian national team at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Goalkeeper Sydney Martinez (2020) and forward Sydny Nasello (2020 and 2021) also earned All-America honors and were among the Bulls who were named AAC Offensive Player of the Year, AAC Midfielder of the Year, AAC Defensive Player of the Year or AAC Goalkeeper of the Year a total of eight times. The players he coached hold each program’s individual record and the most, if not all, top-10 finishes in each category.
