Georgia basketball has added a new member to its support staff, joining a Bulldogs freshman who is one of the highest-ranked recruits in program history.
And it is legal under NCAA rules.
Darryl Hardin, who had worked with five-star forward and NBA first-round pick Asa Newell, was hired as the Bulldogs’ director of player development. Hardin was a co-founder and coach at 1Family, an AAU basketball program in Central Florida.
In his new job, he will be able to expect an annual salary of $102,000, according to information from UGA.
NCAA rules prohibiting the employment of a person associated with a junior basketball talent within two years before or after the player’s enrollment have become more lax.
Hardin’s role is permissible because he is considered one of six people at Georgia who can be a coach (with only four allowed to recruit off campus at a time) and the IAWP (individual associated with a prospect) rules do not apply in this case, according to a rule revision.
Dylan James, a sophomore forward at Georgia State University, also played at 1Family. The same goes for Jaden Newell, Asa’s older brother and a walk-on who earned a scholarship in the offseason.
1Family also counts among its alumni former Georgia guards Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris, former North Carolina forward Nassir Little, who is now with the Phoenix Suns, and guard Isaiah Brown, who is under contract with Florida in 2024.
