SAVANNAH, Ga. – Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief will open a second relief site in the Savannah area on Monday, August 19. The site will be located at Chevis Oaks Baptist Church.
Dwain Carter, director of mission mobilization/disaster relief for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, wrote in an email to volunteers that all areas of the ministry will be represented. This includes teams handling food service, emergency management, shower trucks, cleanup and recovery, and family support. Chaplains and assessors will also be called to serve.
GBDR already operates outreach teams based at Southbridge Community Church in Statesboro.
Carter said the need is great because of flooding from Tropical Storm Debby. “Residents are begging for help,” he said.
Carter said other states could also provide relief teams, but that agencies across the country are overwhelmed by wildfires, storms and flooding. Volunteer teams from Georgia recently deployed to Iowa and Texas.
Anyone who would like to help with disaster relief efforts can register for training or make a financial donation.
