BLOOMINGTON (25News Now) – One of the three candidates who ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Bloomington nearly four years ago is announcing his intention to run for city council.
Mike Straza announced in a press release that he is running for city council in the 5th District, which includes the areas east of Veterans Parkway between Fort Jesse Road to the north and East Oakland Avenue to the south.
The Ward 5 City Council seat is currently held by Nick Becker, who is finishing his first four-year term. Becker did not respond to messages from 25News discussing his political plans.
Straza describes himself as an entrepreneur, business consultant, mentor and community leader.
On his campaign website, he explains that his plan, “Building Bloomington Together,” has four components: improving public services, promoting economic development, finding affordable housing solutions and ensuring community safety.
Regarding the housing needs, Straza said:
“The housing situation in our community is becoming more urgent every year. There is simply not enough affordable, accessible housing for our residents. Solutions are not simple; there are many factors contributing to this very complex problem. As community service providers meet and weigh options, our support is critical. We must find solutions for families who desperately need stable, affordable homes.”
The local elections will take place on April 1st.
