ATLANTA, Ga. — Chattanooga Clarissa Salinas did it again for the Georgia State Panthers. Her last-minute goal tied the game at 2-2 in the women’s soccer season opener and echoed UTC’s 1-1 draw with Georgia State on the same court in 2022.
Just when it looked like the Panthers could take the lead with an 85th minute goal,th Minute, Salinas reacted with a penalty in the 89th.th to secure a tie for Chattanooga.
UTC newbie Paige Thomas drew a foul just inside the 16-yard box, which gave the Mocs a penalty. Salinas took the ball into the bottom right corner and tied the game at 2-2.
“A hard-fought opening game against a talented Georgia State team,” said Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said after the game. “We showed quality, physicality and a lot of fighting spirit to equalize at the end. We will build on this performance and prepare for a tough game on Sunday in Tennessee.”
The Mocs scored the first goal in the 19th minute.th Minute after a corner kick by Zoe Mize. She took the corner kick to the near post where it deflected off the post and the GSU goalkeeper. Caroline Richvalsky was in the right spot and the ball landed at her feet on the line. She pushed it in and gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead.
Georgia State tied the game early in the second half and took a lead in the 85th minute.th Minute with a header after a corner.
Chattanooga had 11 shots to Georgia State’s 12 and both teams had five shots on goal. Mocs goalie Caroline Ekern He made three saves, including two diving saves in the first half, to keep the Panthers from scoring in the opening period.
