Fall Camp Video and Report: August 16 – University of Nebraska

Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield met with media representatives on Friday following his team’s fall training camp.

Satterfield talked about the team’s upcoming second scrimmage, the wide receiver group as a whole, an extra week of practice and the emphasis on ball security.

“We’ve been doing this for 14 or 15 practices now, the execution,” he said. “Practice game one, we’re doing some installations, some guys are getting into new positions and learning the system. We want to go out tomorrow with the older groups, the first two groups, and I want it to be a clean and efficient operation – great tempo and clean football, take care of the ball.”

Satterfield discussed the wide receiver group as a whole.

“We have a very talented group,” he said. “Last year, we wanted to pull our hair out at times playing guys that are so young. Now we’re taking advantage of guys who are only sophomores of college football and have so much experience. They play against each other, it’s a big room with a lot of personality. They have fun. I think they love each other, they love being together. They love competing with each other. It makes them a better unit overall. They have a lot of different skill sets. Big guys, small guys. Guys who may not be sprinters but can manipulate space in zone coverage, and we have guys who can fly. I’m really happy with this group and how they’re developing right now.”

Satterfield then talked about there being an additional week of camp before school starts.

About an additional week of camp before school starts
“Just being with them, you know, just having them with us, and I think Coach (Rhule) did the best job I’ve ever seen of situational football,” Satterfield said. “I think sometimes when you run out of time in camp, you try to fit everything in and maybe you can’t put a lot of time into it. We just left a 20-minute situational break. He (Rhule) called situations and we had to execute. I think that’s going to benefit players and coaches. We don’t know the situations. The extra week allows us to do things like that and not just rush plays and check boxes. We can just slow down and make sure we’re doing everything right and you can do those things like we did today.”

Satterfield also emphasized that the ball should be avoided at all costs.

“I don’t want to curse us, but we’re doing a lot better,” he said. “I mean, there’s not a meeting or a day that goes by that there’s not an emphasis on ball security, like we have to win the turnover margin. That’s one of our pillars. We have to win the turnover margin. We’re focused. As a ball carrier, you have to be focused to do that, and hopefully we’ll improve.”

The Huskers will practice again tomorrow. Head coach Matt Rhule will be present at the practice with media presence.
