Explosion rocks house in Excelsior Springs, 2 bodies found in the rubble

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Missouri (KCTV) – Two adults and a family dog were found dead following a house explosion in rural Excelsior Springs Friday morning.

“We have now found two bodies in the rubble of the house, presumably those of the residents,” said Sarah Boyd of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said it first received calls about a house explosion on Kimberly Drive, just west of Rocky Hollow Lake, around 4:45 a.m.

The Missouri State Fire Department, U.S. Marshal’s Office, Excelsior Springs Police Department and Missouri Fire Department and Search and Rescue Canine Unit responded to the emergency.

When officers arrived in the neighborhood, they found the house destroyed and on fire.

Deputies said the explosion ripped open doors and damaged other homes nearby. The blast was felt for miles.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department is leading the criminal investigation but said there is no evidence of foul play at this time.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that homes in the neighborhood run on propane. The Missouri Propane Commission is investigating the fire.

“We want to make sure we do a thorough investigation so this doesn’t happen to anyone else again,” said Sarah Boyd of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. “If there’s anything we can do to help others prevent this from happening, we want to do it,” she said.

The coroner will attend the scene of the accident and will release the names of the deceased once their identities have been confirmed and next of kin have been notified.
