Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dennis Lee Hendershot, 65, Las Vegas, NV, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, surrounded by his family and loved ones, in a Las Vegas hospital from complications of Covid.

Dennis was born on March 16, 1959, in Minot, North Dakota, to Jerald and Darlene (Hoellinger) Hendershot. He grew up in Minot and attended Little Flower School and Bishop Ryan Catholic School, graduating in 1978. He attended NDSSS in Wahpeton and then Minot State College, where he earned a degree in criminal justice.

After graduating, he became a correctional officer at the Ward County Jail in Minot. Never wanting to stay in one place for too long, he took advantage of career opportunities to travel all over the United States. While rising through the ranks in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, he lived in California, Georgia, Kansas, North Carolina, and Hawaii. He retired in 2015 as an assistant warden in Arizona.

Dennis loved and was still very active in many outdoor sports including tennis, hiking, biking, golfing, swimming, and most recently pickleball. In his retirement, he taught himself all aspects of home renovation and mostly helped others with their projects. Dennis purchased his childhood home in Minot. He enjoyed visiting family and former classmates when he returned to North Dakota.

Dennis was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in October 2023 and sought treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He lived there until June 2024 and left Minnesota a happy, healthy man. Dennis’ successful stem cell collection in May yielded 7 million cells that were frozen for possible future transplant. They have now been donated to multiple myeloma research at the Mayo Clinic, as he had requested at the time of collection.

Dennis cared deeply about his health. He was constantly reading articles and studies, researching and learning about the latest medical tests and breakthroughs. He shared his findings with anyone who would listen.

His Covid illness took him by surprise and we are so sorry. Rest in peace, dear brother.

He is survived by his partner, Mary Li and family, Las Vegas, NV; his son, Jordan (Heather) Hendershot, Minot, ND; his grandchildren, Adalyn and Jace Hendershot, Minot ND; his siblings, Robert Hendershot, Bismarck, ND, Debra Gebur, Garrison, ND, David (Kelly) Hendershot and Pamela (Blake) McKay, Minot, ND; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ronald and his brother-in-law Larry Gebur.
