Republican Rep. Richard Brown of Kansas City has won his party’s nomination for lieutenant governor of Missouri. His victory means he will be eligible to run in the general election in November.
Brown said he was not running to get the job – he was running to do the job.
“A lieutenant governor sits at the table with the Economic Development Council,” he said. “They’re talking about housing in this state. Rents are too high! We need to do something about affordable housing in this state and we need people there who really want to do something. OK? We get lip service like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re going to do something.’ No, you have to really want it.”
The House Minority Leader said he wants to prioritize the needs of ordinary Missourians.
“You know, the needs of Missouri families have been ignored for far too long,” Brown said. “We need someone at the table who speaks for the people. That’s the job of the lieutenant governor of this state. He’s an advocate for the seniors.”
Brown addressed the media after his victory in the primary election on Tuesday night and said he wanted to make sure Missouri was a business-friendly state. He also criticized the current Republican two-thirds majority in the legislature, which hinders this.
“Everything we do in the legislature is discouraging people from coming to Missouri,” Brown said. “You need a goodwill ambassador, someone who is a good face for Missouri and says, ‘Hey, listen, we want your business. We want you to come here.’ But most importantly, we want people here, and we want to be able to provide affordable housing for the people who are here once they’re here and a good education for their children.”
In November, Brown will face Republican Dave Wasinger and Libertarian Ken Iverson.
