Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery was brutally honest about his opinion on agent Scott Boras’ handling of his free agency.
In an article published Friday, Montgomery told the Boston Herald, “I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. … I don’t know, Boras obviously messed up somehow, so I’m just trying to put the offseason behind me and forget about it.”
There were many rumors last winter that Montgomery would join Boston as a free agent, but he ended up signing a one-year, $25 million deal with the D-backs. He signed on March 29, shortly after Opening Day, and had to ramp up without spring training.
Shortly thereafter, he left Boras and moved to another agency, Wasserman. The 31-year-old has a player option for 2025 worth $22.5 million.
MLB Trade Rumors had predicted a six-year, $150 million deal for Montgomery. The Athletic predicted a five-year, $127 million deal.
Montgomery became a free agent last year after a great season. In 32 appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, he posted a 3.20 ERA and won his first World Series.
This year his ERA is 6.44 in 19 starts.
The Diamondbacks moved Montgomery out of the starting lineup after his start on Wednesday because Ryne Nelson threw better than the veteran and earned the fifth spot. Montgomery will adjust to a role in the bullpen for a club that is in the midst of the wild-card and division races in the final month of the regular season.
Montgomery was part of a group of Boras clients who waited until very late in the offseason – or, in Montgomery’s case, into the season – to sign short-term contracts. Blake Snell, Matt Chapman, Cody Bellinger and JD Martinez were the others.
