Billy Joel gives a taste of what’s to come after his performance at Madison Square Garden
The Piano Man recently concluded his ten-year run of performances in the world’s largest arena
This weekend on Sunday todayWillie Geist chats with Billy Joel, who gave a sneak peek at his next plans after finishing his residency at Madison Square Garden last month.
“We’re going to keep doing shows,” Joel Geist says in a teaser released by NBC News. “We have a full schedule worked out through 2025 where we’ll be playing.”
Joel explained an “exclusivity aspect of the Madison Square Garden deal” that prevented him from playing any more shows in the New York City area. He says now that the residency is over, he will “play New York again because we can use other venues.”
“And now we get to play in stadiums. Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium, Citi Field, where the Mets play, so there’s a lot of that planned,” he adds. “I’m not going to stop doing shows. That’s what I do.”
Joel says he has no plans to retire any time soon.
“What else should I do? Stop doing shows, sitting around, watching TV and becoming a nursing case? No. I don’t want that,” he says.
The full interview will air on NBC News. Sunday today with Willie Geist on Sunday, August 18. Check local program schedules.
In December 2013, Joel was named Madison Square Garden’s first-ever music franchise, joining the ranks of the storied venue’s other original franchises – the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. The record-breaking residency began in January 2014, with Joel playing a show at the Garden each month “as long as demand continues,” as Joel said at the time. In January 2015, Joel broke his own record for “most consecutive performances by an artist” with his 13th show of the residency, and a new banner was raised in the Garden’s rafters. In July 2015, Joel broke another record for “most performances by an artist” with his 65th show, for which another banner was raised. Both of Joel’s banners remain hanging at the Garden and are replaced each month with each performance. Joel’s ten-year career will end on July 25 with his 150th performance at this historic New York City venue.
Earlier this year, CBS honored the performance with Joel’s first concert special. The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden – The greatest arena run of all time was filmed at Joel’s record-breaking 100th consecutive franchise performance at Madison Square Garden on March 28, and featured his first single in decades, “Turn The Lights Back On.”
The 74-year-old Piano Man will headline a number of stadiums in 2024. Solo performances and concerts with Stevie Nicks and Sting are planned through the fall.
