Former Springbok fullback Percy Montgomery rescued a baby dolphin stranded on the beach in Arniston in the Western Cape over the weekend.
The Boks legend enjoyed a yummy Weekend getaway with radio DJ Ryan O’Connor and Stormers coach John Dobson at the Arniston Spa Hotel this weekend to support SA’s dominance in rugby and UFC as part of a promotional event for SA Rugby Magazine.
It was already quite a successful weekendwhen our boys in green and gold defeated the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday and Dricus du Plessis won the battle against Israel Adesanya on Sunday morning.
But then the old rugby star went and saved a life, finally coming to terms with the fact that Saffas rule.
After the game, Ryan, Percy and some other friends were driving past Shark Point when they spotted what looked like a stranded animal down on the beach, Smile FM reports.
When they realized it was a baby dolphin, they climbed down the cliffs. There, Percy says, his natural instinct overcame him and he picked up the dolphin to push it back into the sea.
A video shows the fully clothed Montgomery bravely scooping up the slippery calf and carrying it safely back to the sea. Watch the baby freak out when it realizes it’s safe home in the waves:
Montgomery said the experience was “incredible”:
“I swam with them in Bermuda, but for me the most incredible thing was to save a little baby dolphin. It was a very special moment to come to Arniston, the Bokke won, and to save a little baby dolphin is just incredible!”
What a moment. Montgomery played 102 tests for the Springboks between 1997 and 2008. His greatest success in the Springboks colours was the 2007 Rugby World Cup, where he helped South Africa win the Webb Ellis Cup. The now 50-year-old rugby player is still South Africa’s top points scorer with 893 points thanks to 25 tries, 153 conversions, 148 penalties and six drop goals.
But that has to be Montgomery’s best tackle of all time, right?
