Bad weather shortens opening game on Thursday evening

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri – The Southeast Missouri women’s soccer team (0-0-0) kicked off its 2024 season on Thursday night against Missouri-St. Louis (0-0-0) at Houck Field. Due to thunderstorms in the area, the game was canceled at halftime.

According to NCAA guidelines, the game does not count because it did not last longer than 70 minutes to be considered a complete game. Statistics from the first half of the contest do not count.

The Redhawks and Tritons had a contentious duel in the first 45 minutes, as SEMO scored more shots on goal than the guests (5:4). Emily Baker And Cayla Körner SEMO led with a total of three shots from the top duo.

In the first half, nine Redhawks played the full 45 minutes as goalkeeper Madison Geisler, Alli Saviano, Cayla Körner, Abbey Klund, Justin Nelson, Melissa Kubin, Alayna Jakul, Elisabeth RaterAnd Kristin Anderson were in the starting eleven.

For Klund, Saviano and Anderson, Thursday’s competition was the first start in a SEMO jersey in their careers. Madison Geisler was between the posts for only the second time in her career.

Geisler was able to block a shot at a crucial moment in the game. UMSL’s Kendal White got behind the SEMO defense and was one-on-one with the sophomore goalie. Geisler blocked the shot, keeping the score at zero.

The Redhawks are back in action on Sunday, August 18, with another home game against Murray State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Houck Field.
