Backup OT concerns, exciting QB2 battle and more

The Cowboys return home in a week.

In the second preseason game, there was not enough order in the running back room, but QB Trey Lance showed progress and the defense had some impressive moments.

After two warm-up games, here is our current 53-man squad. Further changes are to be expected.

Quarterbacks (3)

Players: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance

The only question concerns the battle between Rush and Lance. It didn’t seem like a battle for the No. 2 spot until Saturday night, when Lance scored two touchdowns. Lance has improved since the first day of training camp, but has he done enough to surpass Rush?

Running back (3)

Players: Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Royce Freeman

Deuce Vaughn led his team in rushing with 6.8 yards per carry against the Raiders, earning a spot back on the roster. Freeman improved his chances after returning from a groin injury, rushing for 32 yards on seven carries. Dowdle and Elliott were out against the Raiders. We know Elliott is good. Is Dowdle good? Fullback Hunter Luepke, Vaughn and Malik Davis are also in the running.

Cowboys RB Deuce Vaughn impressed against the Raiders. Was it enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster?

Wide receiver (6)

Players: Jalen Tolbert, Brandin Cooks, KaVontae Turpin, Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks and CeeDee Lamb

There is an idea that the Cowboys will try to sign Flournoy to the practice squad, but he has come back strong from a knee injury that slowed his development in training camp. Jalen Cropper, David Durden, Tyron Billy-Johnson and Kelvin Harmon will need to impress in the final preseason game to make a difference.

End of penalty area (4)

Players: John Stephens, Luke Schoonmaker, Jake Ferguson and Brevyn Spann-Ford

Spann-Ford’s guaranteed salary of $245,000 is pretty generous for an undrafted free agent and will keep him around. Stephens will likely get more play in the final preseason game against the Chargers, but Princeton Fant should not be underestimated.

Offensive Line (10)

Players: Cooper Beebe, Tyler Guyton, TJ Bass, Brock Hoffman, Zack Martin, Tyler Smith, Josh Ball, Asim Richards, Terence Steele and Matt Waletzko

Somehow that position group will change, but it’s difficult to find good offensive linemen on the market. The Cowboys don’t have a true swing tackle after Chuma Edoga’s toe injury. Ball played a little left tackle in the Raiders game, and the Cowboys want to keep Waletzko on the right side. The infield is fine, especially with Beebe stepping up strong in the middle. But the backup tackle spot is a concern.

Defensive line (9)

Players: Mazi Smith, Albert Huggins, DeMarcus Lawrence, Jordan Phillips, Carl Lawson, Marshawn Kneeland, Justin Rogers, Osa Odighizuwa and Chauncey Golston

Similarly, there will be more changes to this unit before the regular season begins. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer continues to look for depth, particularly pass rushers, to complement Lawrence. If Lawson can give them something in the two under-cover practices and the final preseason game, that could be enough. Huggins is a surprise pick for some, but he does crowd the pocket. Viliami Fehoko’s move to end is an attempt to give him a comfortable spot along the line, and he could earn a spot on the roster.

Linebackers (5)

Players: Micah Parsons, DeMarvion Overshown, Damone Clark, Marist Liufau and Eric Kendricks

This group is pretty solid, but Clark’s knee injury, which isn’t considered serious, and Kendricks’ back issues midway through training camp give us some cause for concern. Damien Wilson and Willie Harvey could earn a spot in the 53 based on special teams work.

Defensive Backs (10)

Players: Jourdan Lewis, Donovan Wilson, Trevon Diggs, Markquese Bell, DaRon Bland, Malik Hooker, CJ Goodwin, Juanyeh Thomas, Caelen Carson and Andrew Booth

This is a solid group. Carson had to sit out some time with a root canal and you’d like to see him in one more game. Booth has gotten plenty of snaps since being traded to the Cowboys, but you wonder if Kemon Hall (North Texas), who was a pick-six against the Raiders, will make the 53. Israel Mukuamu is not to be forgotten and there’s a chance Eric Scott could be put on the practice squad if he’s not on the 53.

Specialists (3)

Players: Brandon Aubrey, Bryan Anger and Trent Sieg
