Authorities seek suspect in connection with break-in at Trump campaign office in Virginia
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign office in Auburn, Virginia, was broken into over the weekend, local authorities said on Monday. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a suspect in connection with the break-in and has released still images of a white male suspect wearing dark clothing, a hat and a backpack from the office’s surveillance footage, while asking the public for help in the investigation.
Authorities were notified of the break-in on Sunday evening and headed to the location, which also houses the headquarters of the Virginia 10th District Republican Committee.
“It is rare for a political campaign or party office to be broken into,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said in a statement. “We are committed to identifying the suspect, investigating why it happened and determining what may have been taken and what may have been left behind.”
HuffPost has asked Trump’s campaign team for comment on the incident.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating a series of cyberattacks suspected of being carried out by Iran. One of them targeted longtime Republican Roger Stone, a Trump ally, according to the Washington Post. Stone’s email account appears to have been compromised by the hackers, who then used it to send messages to people on Trump’s campaign team, the Post reported. The FBI confirmed Monday that it is investigating a cyberattack on Trump’s campaign team, without providing further details.
Hackers also targeted staff from the now-defunct Biden-Harris campaign, but their phishing attempts appeared to have been unsuccessful, sources told The Post.
The former president chatted with billionaire Elon Musk in a live event on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night, spreading falsehoods and attacking his main rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
