For left-hander Jordan Montgomery of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the last year was interesting and turbulent.
First, Montgomery was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Texas Rangers at the 2023 trade deadline. He then helped the Rangers win the World Series. In the offseason, Montgomery signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks late in spring training.
Montgomery’s tenure in Arizona has been disastrous. He has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness, going 8-6 with a 6.44 ERA. He has started just 19 times and pitched just 95 innings. The Diamondbacks are moving him to the bullpen.
On Friday, Montgomery blamed agent Scott Boras for some of his problems last year.
“Obviously Boras messed it up somehow, so I’m just trying to put the offseason behind me and forget about it.”
Montgomery was expected to get a $100 million-plus contract last offseason, but instead he had to settle for a two-year, $50 million deal. Additionally, the late signing led to a late start to the season and likely contributed to his injury problems and early-season struggles.
Montgomery had already fired Boras in April.
The 31-year-old South Carolina native is in the eighth year of his career with the New York Yankees, Cardinals, Rangers and Diamondbacks. His record is 46-40 and his ERA is 3.99.
The Diamondbacks are currently battling with the San Diego Padres for the first wild card spot in the National League playoffs. On Friday evening they will play against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
