All clear at Georgia State Capitol after “hoax” email that led to evacuation

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Authorities have given the all-clear to the Georgia State Capitol after an apparent “hoax” email threat led to a closure and evacuation Thursday afternoon.

At around 1:50 p.m., the Georgia Department of Public Safety – which oversees the Capitol Police Division and the Georgia State Patrol – was notified “of an email regarding a threat” to the Capitol, according to department spokeswoman Courtney Lund.

Patrol officers and Capitol Police were notified, “and security protocols were immediately put in place at the Capitol,” Lund said.

The Capitol was soon evacuated, and police officers, along with canine units from the Capitol Police, Georgia Tech Police, and Georgia World Congress Center Police, began searching the building.

After a thorough search of all four floors of the Capitol, the all-clear was given at 3:04 p.m. and normal operations resumed, Lund said.

“The email is probably a hoax that was sent to several countries,” said Lund. The exact content of the threat and the identity of the sender are currently unknown.

Lund said there were no injuries or property damage in the incident.

This is a developing story. Check back with Atlanta News First as we learn more.
