According to California police, 19-year-old was found dead in a field after being kidnapped from a park

A 19-year-old woman who went missing after being kidnapped from a California park has been found dead, police said.

Andrea Vazquez and another man were in the parking lot of Penn Park in Whittier when an armed man approached shortly after midnight on Sunday, Aug. 20, Whittier police said in a news release, McClatchy News previously reported.

The man who was accompanying Vazquez told officers he ran away after the man fired shots in their direction, police said. When he returned, he found blood near his vehicle. Vazquez was missing, police said.

It appears that Vazquez and the man were “randomly targeted,” police said in a Facebook post on August 22.

After Vazquez’s disappearance, police said they searched for her “in large open areas of Moreno Valley.”

Vazquez was found dead around 11:50 p.m. on August 21 “in a vegetation field” in Moreno Valley, police said.

Gabriel Esparza, 20, of Whittier, was arrested at his workplace in Lakewood on Aug. 21, police said. He was booked into jail on murder and kidnapping charges and is being held without bail.

Both the weapon allegedly used in the shooting and Esparza’s truck were seized, police said.

Police said the investigation was still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 562-567-9299.

Whittier is located about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
