3-year-old victim of bear attack in Red Lodge to leave hospital

The three-year-old girl who was attacked by a black bear at a campsite in Red Lodge over the weekend is expected to leave the hospital.

Madison Findley-Dickson still has a long recovery process ahead of her after being attacked while sleeping in the family’s tent at Perry’s RV Park and Campground, according to family visiting Red Lodge from near Spokane, Washington.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said they captured and euthanized a black bear in the area where rangers believe it attacked the girl, but said the agency can never be 100 percent sure they killed the right bear.

The bear was a young female that FWP said had never been in conflict with humans before, but after that weekend they felt it was necessary to kill the bear to protect people.

According to FWP, numerous unsecured bait items were found in the tent, including garbage, food, drinks (not water), and some dirty diapers.

Chrissy Webb, FWP communications manager, said the story is a tragic reminder of how important it is to be as aware of the bear danger as possible.

“We always want to remind people to put these things away,” Webb said. “That includes everything from garbage to food to scented toiletries. You should store these in a hard-sided vehicle or other certified bear-proof container to avoid cases like this where bears are attracted to a tent because there are odorous items inside.”
