2024 Pittsburgh Steelers Defense Preseason Charting – Key Takeaways

With the 2024 preseason complete, we can go through our charts and pick out the most interesting and relevant data from our weekly charts, which we will continue into the regular season. This data is less meaningful and we won’t go into it as thoroughly as we did at the beginning of the game analysis, but it is a good way to statistically summarize the Pittsburgh Steelers’ three preseason games.

– These statistics are based on 190 games, excluding those not counted due to a penalty.

– Here are the personnel groupings the Steelers defense used in those 190 snaps.

Nickel: 48.9 percent (93 snapshots)
3-4: 43.7 percent (83 snaps)
Dime: 3.7 percent (7 snapshots)
3-4 over: 2.1 percent (4 snaps)
Large Nickel: 1.1 percent (2 snapshots)
2-5: 0.5 percent (1 snap)

– Pittsburgh maintained preseason form until week three, when they did more game planning, used more dime defense, and utilized their over front.

– Here are the two best snap count leaders among the position groups.

Defence line

Isaiah Loudermilk: 82
Jacob Slade: 71

Linebackers

Kyron Johnson: 127
Julius Welschof: 122

Jacoby Windmon led the inside linebackers with 92 snaps.

Secondary

Jalen Elliott: 105
Ryan Watts: 83

In the corner, Cory Trice Jr. had the most reps with 65. I thought I’d mention him since the top two were safeties.

– Overall, these are the Steelers’ pressure leaders.

Print Guide

Nick Herbig: 6
Keeanu Benton: 5
Julius Welschof: 4
Kyron Johnson: 3

-And here are the top performers of the above names per snap. The lower the number, the better.

Pressure rates

Nick Herbig: 3.5
Keeanu Benton: 3.6
Julius Welschof: 14.3
Kyron Johnson: 19.3

The sample size is small, but Herbig and Benton had incredibly good numbers. Herbig only had 21 pass rushes while Benton only had 18. They were dominant.

Goals

Only those that have at least three goals are displayed.

Darius Rush: 1/3 15 meters
Kalon Barnes: 2/3 19 meters
Jalen Elliott: 2/3 39 meters
Thomas Graham Jr.: 3/4 42 meters
Kiondre Thomas: 3/4 48 meters
Zyon Gilbert: 5/5 42 meters

Because the number of snaps and sample size is so small, there’s not much to learn here. But these are the numbers. Beanie Bishop Jr. and Cory Trice Jr. were each targeted twice and allowed two completions, although Trice tackled both screens for minus-1 yards.

– Bishop blitzed nine times, but he didn’t apply pressure. Graham blitzed five times, but he didn’t apply pressure. In total, Pittsburgh blitzed 19 times on 100 dropbacks.
