Two people were hospitalized Friday after being stung by a swarm of bees in Riverside County.
According to a Riverside County Fire Department post on X, firefighters said it happened just after 7:30 p.m. in the 9500 block of 52nd Street in Jurupa Valley.
When rescue workers arrived, they found both victims, whose identities have not yet been revealed, stung by the swarm of bees. One of the victims is said to be in moderate condition, the second in serious condition. They were taken to a local hospital.
Antonio Moreno and his son were hospitalized after the attack. He still can’t believe it, but is grateful that he and his 12-year-old son Mateo are alive.
“I had never experienced anything like that until that day,” he said in Spanish. “They came, we were just sitting there, and then they attacked us.”
Moreno was stung 250 times and passed out in the ambulance while paramedics took him to the hospital.
The firefighters also found that four horses had been stung by the bees. A veterinarian was called to treat them. However, two of the horses died.
Max Bautista, an ECO Guard technician, came to the property about a week later to remove the hive. He believes he removed about 50,000 bees.
“This hive has been there for about a year, probably longer depending on how much I’ve pulled out,” he said. “I’ve pulled out about 100 pounds of honeycomb.”
